younger brother, John for $100 (Bath Deeds, 28:394); this transaction was witnessed by Russell Burleson and Moses Hallett. John later sold this land 27 Apr 1839 to Daniel Marshall of Cameron. Although there is no record of any new iand purchase for Thomas2, he and John are neighbors in the 1840 census of Canisteo. Thomas and John probably shared the farm by splitting the original purchase price. John bought sixty-one acres of Israel and Priscilla ( ) Persons 12 Jun 1839 for $500 and later purchased land from Jarathamael and Esther (_ ) Powers and Nathan and Nancy (Hallett) Crosby. John was appointed guardian to his three youngest siblings upon the death of Thomas1. He resided in Canisteo in 1850 and last sold land there in 1856; he probably arrived in Iowa soon afterwards. He was among a group that petitioned President James Buchanan for the right to continuing living on lands that were formerly part of the military reserve of Fort Atkinson, Washington Twp., Winneshiek Co. John had 160 acres of the southwest corner of the reserve. The other petitioners were Charles Clark, Thomas W. Coleman, George Cooney, Gotlob Krumm, Edmund G.P Mittleberger, Joseph Morse, Louis F. Tavernier, John Schempp, and Andrew Sieber. In 1857, John appeared as the defendant in a District Court case at Decorah, Winneshiek Co. On 1 Oct 1856, he had become indebted to Clark & Hallbeck at Calmar for the sum of $45.31 plus interest on “goods, weares, and merchandize.” Among the items listed in John’s account were a pair of shoes; apparently he was not a shoemaker like his eldest brother, Thomas2 Streeter. Clark & Hallbeck soon sold the account to Farley, Norris, & Co. about 1 Dec 1856. In John’s defense, his lawyer, Dryden Smith, stated: “...the said Clark and Hallbeck was and are justly indebted to the Defendant in the sum of thirty four Dollars for services rendered by the Defendant for said Clark & Halback (sic) at their request, for nursing wife of said Clark whilst sick and for going on (a) trip to West Union, Fayette Co., Iowa, and for money paid out, to the amount of ten Dollars, at their request for their use and benefit, and the Defendant prays judgment for said amount and costs.” (Winneshiek County District Court Records, Decorah Genealogy Association) Children, surname Streeter.
